North Dakota governor signs bill to protect 'Fighting Sioux' nick

North Dakota Gov. Jack Dalrymple (R) signed into law a bill to save the "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo at the University of North Dakota.

The North Dakota Board of Higher Education was already planning to retire the controversial symbol when lawmakers stepped in. Now state attorney general Wayne Stenehjem is trying to determine whether the bill has an effect on a settlement reached with the NCAA to eliminate the name.

Members of the Spirit Lake Dakotah Nation voted to support the nickname f the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe is on record in opposition.
