North Dakota Senate committee votes against Fighting Sioux bill

A bill to protect the "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo at the University of North Dakota could be headed toward defeat after a state Senate committee voted against it.

The Senate Education Committee voted 5-2 against House Bill 1263. Sen. Richard Marcellais (D), a member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians, said it's time to let the nickname go.

“I felt that UND’s there for an education, not for a logo or a name,” Marcellais told The Grand Forks Herald . “The main thing is to educate our students. That’s the No. 1 thing.”

The bill already passed the House. It could come for a vote on the Senate floor next week.
