North Dakota Republicans aim to keep 'Fighting Sioux' nickname

Republicans in North Dakota have introduced bills to keep the "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo at the
University of North Dakota.
One bill bars UND and the state Board of Higher Education from retiring the nickname even though both institutions are already phasing it out.
Another bill requires the
Spirit Lake Dakotah
Nation and the
Standing Rock Sioux
Tribe to approve the nickname.
“It’s really sad, from my point of view, that this issue I thought was settled is continuing,” Leigh Jeanotte, the director of American Indian Student Services at UND, told The Fargo Forum in response to the bills.
Members of the Spirit Lake Dakotah Nation voted in support of the nickname and logo but the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe maintains its opposition.
