Saginaw Chippewa Tribe still working on police agreement

The Saginaw Chippewa Tribe is still working on its part of a land claim settlement reached with the state of Michigan and the federal government.

The deal settles the boundaries of the Isabella Reservation. It cross-deputizes state and local officers to enforce tribal and federal law in Indian Country.

Local officers have gone through Bureau of Indian Affairs training. But they are waiting on the tribe to finalize the policing arrangement.

For the time being, felony cases involving American Indians have to be referred to the tribe.
