Rosebud Sioux Tribe plans the first VA cemetery in Indian Country

The
Rosebud Sioux Tribe of South Dakota is working with the
Department of Veterans Affairs to plan what would be the first national cemetery in Indian Country.
The $5.3 million cemetery would be located on an 80-acre site on the reservation. It would be similar to other national facilities but the tribe also hopes to incorporate Lakota elements into the design.
“There’s also a cultural aspect of burying one of our own. With this, we’ll be able to work a little more freely,” Orlando Morrison Sr., the tribe's Veterans Affairs director, told The Rapid City Journal.
The
Black Hills National Cemetery is the only facility in the state that is open to burials. But it's over three hours from the reservation.
