Cole says Chickasaw Nation made promises on land
Thursday, September 16, 2004
Rep. Tom Cole (R-Oklahoma) said the Chickasaw Nation has promised not to start a gaming center on land proposed for a cultural center.
Cole, a tribal member, introduced a land swap bill to benefit the tribe. The tribe would get a 29-acre tract of land in the Chickasaw National Recreation Area from the National Park Service. The Park Service would get 39 acres.
The tribe has a practice of having land taken into trust for non-gaming purposes and converting it to gaming at a later day. But Cole said the tribe won't do that.
The bill contains no provision to restrict gaming on the land. It cleared a House and Senate committee yesterday.
