Wealthy gambler challenges Mohegan Tribe over $1.2M debt

Monday, March 21, 2011

A wealthy gambler says the Mohegan Tribe can't use the Connecticut courts to go after a $1.2 million debt.

Jerome Powers, a Florida millionaire, lost the money while gambling at Mohegan Sun. He signed an agreement allowing the tribe to pursue debt collection in tribal court "and courts of the state of Connecticut," The New London Day reported.

A judge said the tribe could seize Powers' assets. But the tribe won't be able to collect for now because Powers has asked the state Appellate Court to review the case.

Powers claims the agreement he signed is illegal and can't be enforced in state court.
