Alabama attorney general targets Poarch Creek bingo games

Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange is asking the National Indian Gaming Commission to take action against the Poarch Band of Creek Indians.

Strange says the tribe is operating electronic bingo machines in violation of state law. He claims the state constitution bars such gaming even on Indian lands.

"I urge you to make clear that Native American Indian tribes located in Alabama cannot engage in gambling activities that are patently illegal under Alabama law," Strange said in a letter to the NIGC.

The NIGC has repeatedly said the tribe has a right to offer Class II games like bingo. Paper bingo is still legal in Alabama.
