Sen. McCain to campaign at Sturgis biker rally
Monday, August 4, 2008

Sen. John McCain (R-Arizona) is bringing his presidential campaign to South Dakota today but he won't be making any stops in Indian Country.

Instead, the presumptive Republican nominee will appear at the annual motorcycle rally in Sturgis. He'll take part in an event at the Buffalo Chip Campground, one of many venues in the small town.

Native activists and local residents have complained about increasing encroachment of the rally. One controversial venue near the sacred Bear Butte once held a "Best Breast" contest.

McCain is a former two-term chairman of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee. He has released a Native American policy but hasn't campaigned on any reservations.
